
Tips for Removing Automotive Plastic Fasteners
When repairing or installing equipment inside a vehicle, removing plastic fasteners is nearly unavoidable; however, reducing interior damage requires proper technique. Based on our sales experience, three plastic fastener types are the most common, so we have compiled a guide to removal techniques.
Preliminary preparations
A handy tool
This step is universal. Regardless of which plastic fasteners you plan to remove from the vehicle, it is advisable to have a set of plastic pry tools or forked panel clip pliers. These inexpensive, easy to use tools help distribute the applied force and prevent localized cracking.
Be aware of low temperature environments
If outdoor temperatures are low, start by directing a heat gun or a household hair dryer on the low-heat setting at the clip area for tens of seconds to restore the plastic's resilience.

Specific operations

Push Pin Fasteners
During disassembly, do not pry the base directly. First insert a flat-head pry bar at the edge of the pin and gently lift it about 5–8 mm (roughly corresponding to one detent of the pin's protrusion).
At this point the internal locking mechanism is released; then switch to a wide-mouth pry tool and insert it along the outer edge of the base, and with a light pry the entire latch can be removed smoothly.
When reassembling, first pull the pin out, insert the base into the mounting hole, and finally press the pin flush with your finger; a click will indicate it is locked. Be sure to apply even pressure to prevent the pin from tilting.
Threaded Plastic Screws
When removing, first rotate the head counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver, while gently lifting the screw head upward with the other hand or an auxiliary tool.
Do not apply downward force, as that will wear the threads. If the head is worn and slips, insert a thin sheet of rubber to increase friction, or switch to a narrow pry bar and press upward from under the screw head while twisting and lifting; in most cases, this will allow extraction.


Fir Tree / Christmas Tree Clips
When removing, keep a curved-jaw plier or forked pry bar as close to the base of the clip as possible (on the side near the decorative panel), then apply steady vertical upward force.
Because the friction is relatively high, the initial extraction may require substantial force; it is recommended to rock left and right while lifting gently, so the inverted teeth disengage progressively; this approach is safer than a hard pull.
Follow up processing
Almost all plastic clips deform slightly once removed, particularly the inverted-tooth design; reusing them makes it difficult to restore the original retention and can lead to abnormal noises or looseness.
